Not sure if this is the most appropriate place for this, but I use a few different Ubiquiti products to make it all work.
Currently I have 2 farm sites with internet at the house and computer in the barn. Inside the houses are ER-Lite 3s which create a VPN between the 2 farms and both also allow for remote VPN access. At the main farm I have recently installed a pair of Nanobeam 5AC-16s to connect the barns to the network. (used to be a back-to-back DSL line). At the first barn and the receiving side of the nanobeam is a Unifi switch 8 SFP, which then connects with cat5 to a ToughSwitch in a remote office and to the main barn office via fiber and another Unifi switch 8 (400 feet between the unifi switch 8s)
Now we are planning a major new construction project which will be another even bigger barn with brand new Office space, various computer stations, access points for phones and tablets. I will bury fiber allong the main power feeds. In a far corner of the new barn will be another switch connected by fiber that connects more APs and remotely monitored PLC controllers.
Hope this makes sense. There will be more cameras and other devices on the network. There are also APs in many locations to cover the wide area. There are a lot of switches because there are clusters of network equipment in different places that are often 200+ feet apart.
Currently the EdgeRouter in the house is the DHCP server for the whole farm. Critical and commonly accesed devices have static IPs. Would it make more sense to have a smart switch in the new barn be a DHCP server instead? That way if part of the network in the older barn went down the new barn would still work. If I create a VLAN for the cameras and put the NVR on the camara VLAN, would all the traffic from computers to view the NVR have to travel to the house to get onto the other VLAN, or can it hop over on a smart switch?
Should I just have another EdgeRouter in the new barn?
