EdgeMAX 1.9.0, L2TP, and a broken GUI

Hello there,

today I have been trying to setup an L2TP in an EdgeRouter X behind an ADSL line with a Dynamic IP. To make things simple and test if everything is working before moving to a "production" system, I opted-in for local authentication and no firewall at all.

An official tutorial I found and followed is this. Basically I followed the video part with a few exceptions:

  1. I did not set the interface since from what I know it is deprecated
  2. I did everything using the Config Tree from the UI
  3. I did not follow the firewall part at all (it's disabled!)
  4. I set stronger passwords -- maybe some character limit issue?
  5. I did not enter the Public IP of the EdgeMAX device since it's dynamic, but entered 0.0.0.0 instead

After Previewing and Accepting the Configuration Changes, the connection to the router was lost (happens every time I change something IPSec-related on 1.9.0) and a few moments later everything was back up and running.

I refreshed the UI and everything was working. The traffic graphs were working properly, etc. I then connected to the L2TP VPN from the Internet in two devices, a Mac and an iPhone, to test it with multiple clients. It took a few seconds but the connection was successful and everything was working. The Internet traffic was perfectly routable through the VPN as well.

I then visited the UI to test it with more settings like a Firewall, etc. However, this time, when loading, it showed a FATAL ERROR and it mentioned that it cannot load the configuration. After some Googling of the error, I found a simple solution: ssh into the EdgeRouter and reboot it. After doing this, the machine came up, and everything was working perfectly.

I tried connecting to the L2TP server again with one device, the Mac, and it worked again. But after connecting, I visited the UI, and I was welcomed by the same Fatal Error again.

It appears that everything is working perfectly until someone connects to the VPN. After that, everything in the GUI breaks.

Is this a bug in EdgeMAX? Is the tutorial missing something? Did one of my changes break that? What do you think?
