Hi everyone!
I'm moving flat in a few weeks and the new location is in the coverage zone for a Tier2 ISP that has cabled the flats in the building with 1Gb/s symetric single-mode fiber.
They do very little hand-holding and the only thing they provide is the SFP module if required.
As a result, I am in the market for a router capable of handling a full-duplex 1Gbs WAN connection. We're 2 adults in the household and here's a quick inventory of our machines:
- 2 high-end desktop PCs
- 2 laptops
- 1 media center
- 1 NAS
- 3 servers (RaspberryPi, might move them to a single physical and more beeffy machine in the future)
- the usual fleet of tablets/smartphones/e-readers...
- 1 network printer
As downloading for personal use is legal in my country, I am looking into fully utilizing my future connection and therefore I would like to find a router that will not choke on the traffic.
I had initially set my eyes upon the RB3011UiAS-RM based on the public information available on Mikrotik's website, but the Tolly report made me question the real-world performance of Mikrotik's hardware.
As such, I am now looking at Ubiquiti after a good recommendation given by a friend of mine who bought an EdgeRouter PoE for his home.
Could you please help me select a router in Ubiquiti's product line that would meet my requirement?
To recap, here is what I would need:
- Gigabit WAN capable, full duplex, and not only on paper
- Routing to be done as much as possible in silicon (hardware offload), to avoid CPU bottlenecks
- At the very least 3 usable ports (meaning not having to bridge), 1 WAN, 1 LAN and 1 WLAN. LAN and WLAN should share the same network as LAN so that the Wifi devices can access our NAS and printer. I plan to use a UAP-AC lite for the WLAN.
- 1 SFP port if possible, with a dedicated 1Gb/s link. If not, would such a device placed upfront be a good alternative: http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-43_MC220L.html ?
I'm really not an expert and packets per second measurments don't mean much to me, so I'm deferring to your good judgement and expertise to guide me toward the best solution for my needs.
Please let me know if anything is unclear or if you need more information.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Chris
