Hey all,
I am tired of plugging/unplugging my kids network cables from computers, and taking their phones to avoid them using internet... sure there are probably things I can do like just sell them..but today kids need devices for homework, research, etc. Also, its a convenience for us folks that our kids have devices when out at school, events, etc.
But I am pretty sure I must be able to set up groups of devices and be able to enable/disable access to the internet, right?
I am no expert, but I have a decent understanding of the networking stuff. In EdgeMax (v1.8.5) I believe I just need to set up Firewall/Nat groups, which I did.. and added their addresses to their devices. Oh.. I also set static IPs to their devices, which I think uses their MAC Address if I am reading it right? I also see a name in the list of leases, but I have to assume since MAC addresses typically dont change... and more so my kids have no clue about any of this stuff like spoofing/faking any of it, I should be safe to assign static IPs to their devices and also assume based on MAC address they will continue to be assigned those IPs. Is that correct?
So, I set up a group, called Kids Devices, and I added all the individual IP addresses (based on those assigned as static IPs to their devices). From there, I assume I set up a Firewall policy. I add a new policy. I call it Kids. I then set it to REJECT. I am a little confused on DROP vs REJECT, and frankly ACCEPT as well. I assume REJECT means block any activity for any of the devices that are part of the ruleset? So I add New Ruleset, set to reject, then select the Address Group that I set up for kids devices on the source tab.
As far as I understand, this should block any of the IPs in the Address Group I have set up? Or do I also need to add a target to the ruleset, which would be the WAN port I assume?
Anyway, anything I am missing or did wrong..appreciate some help. I wish there was an app for my android phone or easy way for me to just click to enable/disable the selections
