ER-X - initial setup - Stateful Firewall settings not necessarily recommended

Folks,

Recently got an ER-X for home use to tighten up my home network, I really am displeased with the current consumer routers and the ER-X purchase was driven by a review by Steve Gibson of Security Now.

I have upgraded the ER-X firmware to v1.9.0

So I am in the very initial setup of the ER-X and I am following the guide at;

http://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/205197660-EdgeMAX-SOHO-Example

and was perplexed by the statement of;

Stateful Firewall

The following example firewall is just very basic (and not necessarily recommended). Basically this allow any traffic from LAN, WLAN or the router to be initiated out to Internet, but drop all traffic initiated from Internet.

...(and not necessarily recommended)...

Why would this setup be in the Ubiquiti setup examples if it is not recommended, and what would be a recommended setup for a home user?

As I understand, which may be wrong, the very basic setup may be the setup in consumer routers.

I reliaze my home network may not be typical with numerous computers, tablets, phones, several game consoles, HTPC, Roku, and so forth.

Eventually I want to create several subnets for IoT things (don't need my light bulb phoning home), shared wireless access, and private access. But that is for the future setup, though thought it important to mention as far as what might be a recommended setup for the Stateful Firewall.

Any insight to this would be appreciated.

Thanks
DJ
