Problem with ER-POE and Cox cable provider.

Just recently purchased a ER POE 5 port router to replace a ER-Lite 3 port model (to get rid of some power bricks in my network rack).

 

The ERL configuration was stable and no problems with ISP.   It was on 1.7.

 

After I installed the ERPOE-5 I started to experience strange outages with my ISP where the cable modem was online and accessible from outside the network, but could not reach outside the network from inside.  Rebooting the cable modem fixed the issue.  hrm.  Assumed a bad modem and replaced with one from stock.  Still had same issue.  Cable Provider insisted the problem was not with them, but sent a tech anyway.  He knew absolutely nothing other than to check signal levels (which were fine), and they could have done that remotely.  Hell I could have given them to them. 

 

I struggled with the issue for a bit, then decided to swap the routers back out to the original configuration (including swapping back to the original modem).  Problem went away.

 

So I decided to look at what was different.  The physical router obviously, and the firmware levels.  I downgraded the ERPOE5 to 1.7 and reinstalled.  Problem has yet to reappear.

 

Not looking for any solutions, but wanted to report the issue.

 

Other than the switch configuration and POE config stuff the config files were identical.

 

Any ideas what was going on?

 

The symptoms that led up to an outage were massively increasing ping times until things became unusable.
