I promise to read as many posts on DNS as I can tonight... But tomorow morning, I need to have a solution to this situation:
1) Edge Lite router running 1.80
2) Router eth0 as WAN, eth1 as LAN:192.168.1.1
3) Windows 2012 R2 server at 192.168.1.20 running DNS, Domain controller for 'NAVSOMINN.local'
4) Router System tab with System Nameservers set to 192.168.1.20, then 192.168.1.1, then 8.8.8.8
5) DNS forwarding set to forward from eth1 to eth0
6) System tab set to System domain-name set to NAVSOMINN.local
7) I don't know what the DHCP settings are for nameserver, or the two provided nameserver entries. I'll be looking at that tomorrow morning when I get back on to the network in question.
When I set the a windows client machine to: Obtain DNS server addresses automatically, it will ONLY get the ISP's DNS servers. i.e. when I run ipconfig /all, that's what's listed. Further, when the windows client is set to this, it can't find the domain controller.
SO, I set the windows client to Use the following DNS server addresses: 192.168.1.20 and 192.168.1.1
At this point, some DNS resolution works, some fails... BUT, i could find the Windows server domain controller, so it was looking at 192.168.1.20. I have also configured the Windows server DNS to look at 192.168.1.1 after it looks internally. Its very possible I have done this incorrectly, I'm new to configuring a Windows 2012 r2 server DNS.
I would prefer to 'set' the windows client machines to 'Obtain DNS server addresses automatically, and have the EdgeOS software 'point' to the 192.168.1.20 windows DNS first.
Any idea how to do that?
