The only thing I've found that might be related is:
http://community.ubnt.com/t5/EdgeMAX/Traffic-analysis-dobule-counting-traffic/m-p/1344556
Though I'm not certain I actually understand what's going on there just yet.
Here's my story...
I've been an Earthlink High Speed Cable subscriber for nearly a decade. My service is actually provided by Comcast. We stream Netflix and Amazon for our children a lot (seriously a lot). I've never received any sort of bandwidth utilization notice. Because I'm an "Earthlink Powered by Comcast" subscriber, I don't get bandwidth usage reports on my Xfinity account page.
Until this past Friday, I had been using an ASUS wireless router. According to its logs, I was using an average of 200 GB of bandwidth per month, which I felt was incredibly low and wholely inaccurate. But I didn't have any way to confirm accuracy.
I've had an EdgeRouter Lite in place since Friday night. It's been up for 1 day, 14 hours, and 34 minutes. Here are the details it's providing...
On the Dashboard, when I hover over the Tx graph, I'm told the total amount of data that has traversed eth0 (which is plugged into my cable modem) is 1.95 GB. When I hover over the Rx graph, I'm given a figure of 78.43 GB for eth0.
On the Traffic Analysis tab, I configured the Operational Status to Hosts Only a short time after setting things up. It's currentlying giving me a figure of 64.01 GB. It states our two Rokus account for 97.42% of the traffic.
So, I figure the data on the Traffic Analysis tab doesn't match the data on the Dashboard tab because I configured Traffic Analysis some time after initially configuring the router. No worries if that's the case.
So assuming the 78.43 GB and 1.95 GB figures found on the Dashboard are accurate, then that would put my 30 day average at somewhere around...
78.43 GB + 1.95 GB = 80.38 GB for 38.5 hours = average of 2.09 GB / hour * 720 hours (30 days) = 1.5 TB
I know that extrapolation isn't exactly the most accurate way to approach it, but the result is still surprisingly high and 7.5 times what my ASUS router logged for an actual month.
Even if our weekday usage was considerably less than our weekend usage, resulting in a severely bloated 30 day average of 1.5 TB, i'm still concerned about overall accuracy because of the huge difference in the two sets of data.
....
So, am I reading any of this data wrong? Is this related to the double counting described in the thread I linked?
Thanks!
