DNS settings

Well, the initial setup of the ER-X was a breeze but of course that wouldn't last. After methodically doing as little as possible and using the wan+2lan2 wizard, I hit a snag. As a Ubiquiti novice, I did expect some trouble but after following things to a T, it was DNS settings that were the last hurdle.

So I'm writing this to ask two questions: first was the initial setting of my LAN to 10.0.0.1 network. The Edgemax software didn't seem to have trouble with it, but after switching from eth0 to eth1 when the config was done I couldn't get back into the software, kept getting fatal error and it couldn't load the software. After two attempts and resets, I remembered that the Xfinity gateway, which is in bridge mode, has an I'm IP address of 10.0.0.1 for the admin page. Could that have caused a conflict with the ER-X? I then reset to the default 192.168.1.1 that it uses and all was good from there.

The next hang up was the DNS settings. I initially set them at a public, I think, 4.2.2.2 and 8.8.8.8 but that yield almost no throughput and devices would not show a DNS number. Next attempt was to leave them blank and let the Xfinity gateway do it, that also did not work. Each client would show wifi and a DHCP IP address but DNS number. So, no internet. Lastly I put in DNS settings I remembered seeing the Xfinity lay out before, 75.75.75.75 and 76.76.75.75 and voilá it worked.

I guess I'm wondering if that is normal considering the Xfinity gateway in terms of those settings? Or did I miss something else along the way? Either way it's working, but I do wish I could use an IP range beginning with 10.something, and I'm sure using the CIDR calculator I could do it.
