I'm curious if there is any 'recommended and easy' way to make ERLite prioritize things associated with high-priority (ie, VOIP stuff - Google Chat, hangout; Skype; or true-generic SIP device? DNS would be nice as well?!) traffic types
My first attempt was using the 'built in smart queue' config (version 1.7-ish of firmware) and it appeared insufficient for the demand of the environment (ie, up to ~100 users on LAN with many heavy users hitting heavy uploads or downloads. So net result with "Smart Queue" was "The internet died" complaints at least a few times per day.
Second big config change attempt is on 1.8X firmware using HFQ config, with specific bandwidth limits on a per-client-IP basis for upload and download. This appears to "work" (in the sense it limits bandwidth, but not apparently to the numbers I set? just some 'factor' or 'slide scale' which depends on 'intensity of how busy things are - I can't tell to be honest). Generally the network appears to 'work' most of the time and there are 'fewer complaints'.
But. I still don't have specific rules in place to prioritize Voip/Skype/GoogleChat plus DNS type of traffic which would be nice to do if possible.
Just wondering if there are any comments / feedback.
-- possibly I just need to upgrade to latest (1.9 release), and use the new built in QoS wizzard, which I understand has more feature-rich settings under-the-hood with this latest firmware ... potentially will help fix some issues automatically.
-- but either way if anyone has any strong "do this" or "don't do that" advice, any pointers are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim
