OSPF and routing failure

I don't know if I am doing something wrong, but I seem to have an issue with OSPF routing.

Basic layout

  • two routers, each with two ethernet connections to the other over eth5 & eth7 running OSPF
  • Router 1 = NG-CR-RTR1
  • Router 2 = NG-AT-RTR1
  • Router 2 has a route of last resort pointing to an IP address on Router 1
  • "show ip ospf neighbor" is working and showing the Full/DR connections via Eth7 & Eth5.  Eth7 has the lower cost route.
  • "show ip route" shows all routes as I expect them to be on both routers with good route propagation

Problem : as soon as one of the two ethernet interfaces is disconnected between the two routers the command "show ip route" locks up.  The route does NOT shift over to use Eth5 if Eth7 is pulled or vice versa.  Looking at the process list shows ribd at 99% utilization, apparently locked up and preventing any changes to configuration.  Either killing this process (and then restarting it) or rebooting the router returns it to service.

Additional wierdness : this issue only started happening after I had introduced the following configuration onto router 2: "set protocols static route 0.0.0.0/0 next-hop 10.165.252.238"  Prior to me doing this it worked exactly as expected.

I feel it is likely I am not setting my route to 0.0.0.0/0 correctly while utilizing OSPF. I need my router 2 to send all traffic to router 1 no matter which of its two paths is up.  What woudl the correct way of doing this be that won't lock up ribd?

Thanks.
