Good day everyone,
I'm brand new to the Ubiquiti family and was hoping that I can get a bit of advice from the community as I haven't been able to find relevant info in my situation.
Background about myself and my current setup:
I have pretty good general knowledge of setting up consumer level of network equipment but definitely not in the enterprise level. I purchase the EdgeRouter Pro after doing some research and heard a lot of good things about Ubiquiti. I'm hoping that this router will last for another 5 years minimum, and ready for Google fiber which will be deployed in my area early next year.
My current set up is clearly indicated in my kindergarden level drawing (PDF attached). Everything is working fine on the port forwarding and NVR recording on my QNAP NAS. What I ultimately want to achieve, are the followings:
- Mimic the port forwarding structure for my IP cameras, so I can view them live remotely
- I have locked down the ports (Cisco switch port security) so the external data drops are secured by the switch
- Use my Netgear Nighthawk as the Access Point, and use the Edgerouter to handle the QoS part
- Establish a Guest wifi network (which I currently don't have) and this Guest network should not be able to access to any of my internal resources (NAS, printer, cameras etc)
- Use SFP to uplink the router traffic directly to the switch's SFP port, should I use copper or fiber? I have both modules
Questions:
1. I have seen postings saying that I should not "bridge" the ports on the ER since it would degrade the performance. Is this true?
2. When I attempted to enable both SFP (6 and 7), I was only able to enable one of them at a time. I got an error message about something like "can't bridge the port which has IP address assigned). Does this mean I cannot bridge all ports (1 to 7) at the same time? Granted I mainly use the ER as the router and let the switch to handle data distribution, but I'm really puzzled about this.
3. What's the best way to configure the router to meet my needs as stated above? So far, I have configured the basic WAN and LAN, as well as port forwardings but I haven't touched other settings yet. I've read some parts of the user guide but they don't necessary address my questions.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and hopefully answer my newbie questions. Hopefully this is not too intimidating to the point that I have to return the router back to Amazon.
