Background info. Read if you want. Just kinda long.
I do home automation and AV, and home networks are included in that.
I love Unifi AP's and have deloyed a lot of them, probably around 50 of them.
I've also had quite a bit of experience with AirMax equipment.
In my house I have a pfSense router, I built and love it.
Long story short.
One of our customers, owns many aparment complexes.
These complexes have 100+ apartments in each.
We've never really appoarched him to do his commercial work.
It was recently brought to our attention because his mother, who lives in one of the aparements, needed some AV help. Long story short. The internet there at the complex was awful. It was around 2-3Mbps, when I tested it.
That struggles to play a movie on Netflix, and when thats all you do all day, its frustrating.
I was a bit confused on how it was setup. She had a Apple Airport Express and its public IP was a private IP something around 192.168.x.x.
So we got talking to the building manager, he said even in there main office, the internet sucked.
He said there was a 100mb fiber coming into the building. Image may be NSFW.

Wait what?!? 100mb line shared with over 100 apparments, probably closer to 150. He said that the people that were supposed to be in charge of the network screwed it up.
Large Apartment Building Complex
- 100+ appartments.
- 100Mb fiber shared with whole building.
- The average person there is seeing 2-3Mbps and the network is shared and open through the whole building.
- Needs better security bad.
- Single Cat6 to each apartment
- Residents don't have any other choice for internet.
- Cisco Router, Dell Switches, also from what I'm told other routers and stuff are being used as switches and I'm like, what?
- Various consumer grade wifi routers in each apartment
I've never really done a big scale network like this.
I need some advice.
Things needed/planning on
- Starting from Scratch, ripping out everything
- 1Gig line
- Private VLAN for main office. Right now its shared with the rest of the building.
- Traffic Shapping - 5Mbps for everyone, can pay to get more speed.
- Wifi in Lobby, Library, and Office. (A couple UAP-AC-Lite's)
My main question/concern I just don't really know what the best option for limiting traffic to each appartment.
Anyone else ever done something like this? What equipment and config did you use?
I really want to master this building, as he has 20 more of these complex's throughout Utah. With a handfull of them having the same problem.
